Ivy electric bicycle

Our Spencer Ivy electric bicycles have been designed to be highly reliable and comfortable, yet low maintenance allowing the rider to simply get on and go. The world-renowned maintenance-free Panasonic crank motor system is very efficient, quiet and uses a torque sensor to detect the power you apply to the pedals in order to know how much assistance to deliver through the chain. This means you are always in control. If you stop pedaling, the electric motor stops assisting, simple.  This makes it ideal for tackling anything from steep hills to accelerating from junctions and roundabouts with ease, making cycling a lot safer and fun.

Like our customers, the electric bicycles will make you want to use them far more often than you would a conventional bike, and replace many of your usual car journeys. The electric bicycles are made in Germany and come with a 2 year warranty on the motor and battery meaning miles upon miles of trouble-free riding.

Looking at the benefits, our electric bicycles will take you further, faster. It’ll save you time and money on your commutes, whilst benefitting your health and the environment. You can see our ‘Try an Electric Bike’ campaign video with the Environmental Transport Association to see what other first-time electric cyclists think.

  • Motor

The heart of an electric bike is the drive unit, which in turn consists of the motor, the power electronics and the battery. Spencer Ivy uses 250 watt motors, which give the rider up to 250 watt assistance.

The long-lasting central motor is discreetly mounted behind the seat tube, where it is protected and the low centre of gravity ensures optimum handling. The motor is linked to a responsive torque sensor which measures pedal power continuously. Combined with the chain drive, it provides thrust exactly when this is needed and the desired amount of assistance as soon as you set off. The maximum assist level provided by centre motors is 1:2 i.e. 200% assistance.

  • Battery

The battery offers the perfect combination of performance (distance per charge, life) and low weight. Our batteries are some of the safest on the market and are easy to recharge.

Please note: if you want to take your pedelec on holiday, the battery cannot be transported by plane. Since our electric bike batteries are rated hazard class 9, they cannot be transported in passenger planes. Freight aircraft are excluded from this restriction.

  • Recharging

The battery is mounted behind the seat tube and secured with a lock to prevent theft. To recharge the battery, simply remove it and connect it to the charger supplied. The advantage of this arrangement is that only the battery needs to be connected to the socket and not the whole bike.

Lithium-ion batteries do not have a memory effect and can therefore be recharged or topped up at any time, irrespective of how much charge they have left. With a fully run-down battery, charging takes about five hours and uses 0.3 kWh of electricity, which only costs about five pence. The charger which is included as standard weighs 530 grams and can be operated with the 220 V - 240 V electricity supply in the UK and the rest of Europe. Spencer Ivy offers a travel charger so that you will never have to do without the comfort of power-assist on holiday either. This will fit into any bag and is easy to use in different situations.

  • Range

The battery used in Spencer Ivy electric bikes can last a distance of up to 140 kilometres. However, the actual distance is dependent on various factors. For one, the topography of the route has a significant impact. Naturally, the distance is greater on flat roads than over hilly terrain. Similarly, a headwind or tailwind, like the temperature, can influence battery performance. Besides these external influences, the number of stop-starts, an even pedalling cadence and the bike being in perfect technical condition can also help to increase the distance

  • Life

Obviously, the life of a battery is not unlimited. However, the lithium-ion batteries used in Spencer Ivy pedelecs have the longest life of their type. Connecting the battery to the charger early, that is, before it is completely empty, does not reduce battery life either. This capacity equates to 25,000 miles in all (given a maximum distance of 50 miles per charge). Neither does cycling in the rain have an adverse effect on battery life. Since both the battery and the motor are waterproof, no moisture can get in while cycling and cause any damage. Nor does removing the battery mean there is a risk that water will get into the electronics if the bike is transported on a carrier for example.

However, there are things which you should bear in mind in connection with the battery. If you do not use your Spencer Ivy pedelec for more than two weeks and the remaining battery charge is less than 50%, so-called sleep mode is activated. If not used for four months, the battery will transfer to sleep mode however much charge remains. To deactivate sleep mode, simply connect the battery to the charger. Nonetheless, you should make sure that the battery is fully recharged at least once every six months if you do not use your bike regularly, especially during the winter.
